Excerpt from Operation Hidden Truth
When I got home from my morning run along the ocean, my phone was ringing. I hesitated whether I should answer or let it go to voicemail. The caller ID changed my mind. The call was from FBI Agent Jodi Shannon. This was a pleasant surprise.
“Jodi, are you in town?”
“Yes, but I have Brian tagging along.”
“That’s the story of my life. What brings you to the Southland?”
“An old target of yours came up on our radar and I thought you might want to tag along. Jerry Minh has become a part of a plea bargain in a drug trafficking case.”
“You got to be kidding me. Do you realize how long the CIA has chased this guy?”
“I think this is the real deal, Jon.”
“Where do I sign up?”
“Meet us for lunch at the Rusty Nail downtown Long Beach at noon. You may want to be there a little early.”
“I’ll be there with bells on. How long are you in town?”
“I don’t know.”
As I walked through the front door of the restaurant, I saw Jodi and Brian McDonald sitting in a back booth near the window. The FBI always overdressed and if I didn’t know them, I could have easily picked them out from the lunch crowd.
Jodi stood up and gave me a quick hug. It had been awhile. Brian half-rose and shook my hand.
“It sounds like you have something for me here. Explain please?”
“Last week the LA office raided a warehouse near the LA Harbor and came up with two vans full of cocaine. We retraced our steps and sat on the building. And then this guy shows up.”
She turned to Brian. “What was his name?”
He fumbled with a small notebook and said, “He is Jerry Baldwin. He has a rap sheet as big as a phonebook. It looks like he has spent half his life in jail.”
He looked up and made a face.
“Jon, we got him for a drug trafficking charge and he lawyered-up. The counselor is meeting us here shortly.”
“So this guy is big time now?”
“We don’t think so but we are still investigating,” Jodi said.
“So how does this tie to Minh? He’s a gun dealer.”
A Note from Jonathon
My name is Jonathon Stone. Like a lot of single, All-American men I enjoy gambling, drinking, and the ladies.
I am a writer for Real Sportsman Magazine.
Being a writer is a realistic, workable cover but, in reality, I am a Special Agent for the CIA. I am assigned to the West Coast-based – Far East Operation Center located in San Francisco.
At one time our offices were in downtown Long Beach, CA. On the main floor was a complete magazine group with secretaries and a writing staff that produced a monthly hunting magazine.
In the basement of that office building was a full-blown CIA operation with security set up and computer center.
Eventually, our cover was blown, and the staff was scattered to the wind. My boss, Russ Evans, changed my status to At-Large and kept me in the Long Beach area. I live in Belmont Shore, if you want to be more specific.
I am what my fellow agents call an Asset-On-Call. I may just show up anywhere in the world.
As a footnote, we also handle the Domestic Operation - Terrorism (DOT) division. It was formed to handle terrorist threats inside the U.S. after DHS took control of intelligence.
This group is not on the Company’s organization chart.
