Operation Open Borders

A Jonathon Stone Mystery Short Story BY James Moushon

Operation Open Borders

A Jonathon Stone Mystery Short Story

Author: James Moushon

Islamic State Terrorist Leader Killed in Syria

The front-page headline jumped off the page at Jonathon Stone. What a great start to Easter week. Then Jonathon’s celebration was interrupted by a phone call from his CIA boss, Russ Evans. He called to inform him the D.O.T. division was on high alert. They were expecting retaliation.

After a bad night at the Casino Queen, the Silver Sail Bar and Grille was always his alternate plan. His favorite bartender, Diamond, and her assistant Lulu came to his rescue every time.

He sat there drinking his Jack and Coke when he got another phone call with more bad news. Three brothers of the Ahsan Terrorist Group had crossed the southern border illegally and had landed in Detroit. He was sure the leader of the group, Muhammad Ahsan, would not be far behind.

Then things got more complicated. One of the brothers, Omar, shows up in Long Beach at the same time Jonathon gets word that the President was coming to the area.

Jonathon teams with FBI Agent Jodi Shannon to chase down the terrorists and stop an attack. The operation ends in a crazy place on Easter Sunday as an unexpected source saves the day.

C1 Islamic State Terrorist Leader Killed in Syria

The front-page headline jumped off the page.

I sat on my back porch in Belmont Shore and just kept reading.

ISIS Terrorist leader Yasin Al Mustafa along with several of his top people were killed in a drone strike yesterday in Western Syria near the city of Homs. The video shows the destruction of the compound which had been identified as a center for Sunni rebel activity. The drone's after-strike pictures showed no sign of life.

The drone was launched from a ship deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. No other details are available at this time.

I drank my coffee with a smile on my face. Special Ops. Oorah.

I checked my phone. It’s Saturday, April 1st. What a great April Fool’s Day. And a great start to Easter Week.

I had had a brief encounter with Mustafa and his group several years ago but some way they got out of the area before we could finish the mission. Then I was moved to the D.O.T. division of the CIA and got repositioned in the Long Beach area.

I flashed back to my days as a US Marine. Eight years of service. What a ride. I had been a part of a detail that would go in after the attack and investigate the scene. I am sure this op had that going on also. Special forces must be riding high.

My neighborhood was a quiet one. Just a few blocks from the Pacific. I had finished my usual routine jog along Alamitos Bay, a quick bagel at Essie’s Grille, and a slow walk back to my place. What a life.

Belmont Shore is a neighborhood in Long Beach, California. It’s bordered on the West by the Pacific Ocean with roller skating and volleyball as the main attractions. In the middle of town is the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier which is known for its fishing.

But the real action is on 2nd Street. Bars, restaurants, and shops are right in the heart of town. I have been known to walk down the Street.

My joy was interrupted by the dial tone from my phone. It was my boss Russ Evans from the San Francisco office.

“Jon, have you read the latest?”

“You bet. The squad is riding high right now in some bar in Syria. What a kill.”

“I’m calling to inform you the division is on high alert. We are expecting retaliation.”

Our CIA division works domestically so a national event like this runs up the red flag. We will be watching everything that seems out of place. In California, we have a lot of groups from the middle east.

A Note from Jonathon

My name is Jonathon Stone. Like a lot of single, All-American men I enjoy gambling, drinking, and the ladies.

I am a writer for Real Sportsman Magazine.

Being a writer is a realistic, workable cover but, in reality, I am a Special Agent for the CIA. I am assigned to the West Coast-based – Far East Operation Center located in San Francisco.

At one time our offices were in downtown Long Beach, CA. On the main floor was a complete magazine group with secretaries and a writing staff that produced a monthly hunting magazine.

In the basement of that office building was a full-blown CIA operation with security set up and computer center.

Eventually, our cover was blown, and the staff was scattered to the wind. My boss, Russ Evans, changed my status to At-Large and kept me in the Long Beach area. I live in Belmont Shore, if you want to be more specific.

I am what my fellow agents call an Asset-On-Call. I may just show up anywhere in the world.

As a footnote, we also handle the Domestic Operation - Terrorism (DOT) division. It was formed to handle terrorist threats inside the U.S. after DHS took control of intelligence.

This group is not on the Company’s organization chart.
